Enhancing Law Enforcement

SECURE ANALYTICS

SECURE Analytics is built on a deep understanding of the unique challenges police officers face. As normal individuals are continuously exposed to abnormal circumstances, officers often develop dysfunctional coping strategies over time.

These strategies emerge as a result of the constant barrage of high-stress situations, leading to behaviors that may seem abnormal but are, in fact, natural responses to their environment. Dishabituation emphasizes the need for officers to recognize what is already present in their environment. SECURE Analytics leverages this insight and neuroplasticity to help officers dishabituate and reengage with their surroundings in healthier ways.

Integrating SECURE Analytics,

the Police Life Cycle, and Human Resources

as Companions to ABLE and Peer Support

SECURE Analytics and the Police Life Cycle software can act as powerful companion tools to the Active Bystandership for Law Enforcement (ABLE) program and internationally recognized Peer Support programs, with Human Resources (HR) playing a critical role as an agency partner. This collaborative approach enhances the effectiveness of these initiatives by providing data-driven insights, continuous support, and personalized interventions.

Here’s how they can be integrated:

1. Enhanced Data-Driven Insights

SECURE Analytics: This tool complements the ABLE and Peer Support programs by analyzing existing data within law enforcement agencies to identify early warning signs of behavioral or emotional distress in officers. HR can work closely with SECURE Analytics to ensure that these insights are used to develop proactive HR strategies, such as targeted wellness programs or early intervention efforts, aligned with agency goals.

Police Life Cycle: The Life Cycle software maps out an officer’s career and development over time, providing HR with a detailed view of when officers might be most vulnerable to stress or misconduct. HR can use this information to plan and implement supportive HR policies that address these challenges, in coordination with ABLE and Peer Support efforts.

2. Personalized Intervention Strategies

SECURE Analytics: After identifying officers who may be struggling, SECURE Analytics can suggest personalized interventions that align with the principles of the ABLE program and Peer Support. HR can collaborate with LMFTs to ensure these interventions are integrated into the agency’s broader HR practices, including professional development and employee assistance programs.

Police Life Cycle: The software can track the effectiveness of these interventions over time, providing HR with the data needed to continuously improve employee support strategies. This ensures that officers receive consistent support that aligns with both ABLE’s goals and the agency’s HR policies.

3. Supporting a Culture of Peer Intervention

SECURE Analytics: By providing data that demonstrates the positive impact of peer intervention—such as reduced misconduct and improved team cohesion—SECURE Analytics can help promote a culture that values and encourages active bystandership and peer support. HR can use this data to develop policies that reinforce these cultural shifts, ensuring they are embedded in the organization’s values and practices.

Police Life Cycle: The Life Cycle software supports this cultural shift by documenting successful peer interventions, creating a narrative that normalizes and reinforces the importance of peer support. HR can leverage these insights to design and implement training programs that further promote a culture of intervention and support.

4. Integrating Health and Wellness

SECURE Analytics: Recognizing that officer wellness is crucial to the success of ABLE and Peer Support, SECURE Analytics can integrate wellness metrics into its analysis. HR can partner with LMFTs to ensure these wellness programs are comprehensive and accessible, addressing both physical and mental health needs within the agency.

Police Life Cycle: The Life Cycle software helps HR monitor and support officer wellness over time, ensuring that health resources are tailored to the specific needs of officers as they progress through their careers. This approach aligns with ABLE and Peer Support goals, promoting resilience and reducing burnout among officers.

5. Continuous Feedback and Improvement

SECURE Analytics: The system can gather ongoing feedback from officers participating in ABLE and Peer Support programs, with HR playing a key role in using this feedback to refine HR policies and employee support initiatives. This data-driven approach ensures that HR practices are continuously evolving based on real-world outcomes.

Police Life Cycle: The Life Cycle software offers HR a longitudinal view of how ABLE and Peer Support interventions impact officers over time. HR can use this information to adjust strategies, ensuring they remain relevant and effective as officers advance in their careers.

6. Clinical Support from LMFTs

LMFT Oversight: Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs) at LION provide clinical oversight to ensure that the data-driven insights and interventions are grounded in sound mental health practices. HR collaborates with LMFTs to integrate these clinical insights into the agency’s broader HR and wellness strategies, ensuring officers receive the necessary support.

7. LION’s Role and HR Partnership

LION’s Contribution: LION’s inclusion of LMFTs, combined with the use of SECURE Analytics and the Police Life Cycle, positions the organization to offer a comprehensive support system. HR, as a key partner, ensures that these tools and insights are effectively integrated into the agency’s policies and practices, enhancing the overall effectiveness of the ABLE program and Peer Support initiatives.

Identifying Dysfunctional Coping Strategies

Using data that reflects the reality of the policing profession, SECURE Analytics focuses on identifying patterns in how officers respond to the abnormal circumstances they face daily. Through facial perception processing, the tool captures subtle nonverbal cues, such as microexpressions, that may reveal underlying emotions like fear, anger, or sadness. These emotions, when left unaddressed, can contribute to the development of dysfunctional coping strategies, such as emotional suppression or avoidance.

SECURE Analytics also evaluates how officers process and integrate their emotional experiences. This is critical in a profession where constant exposure to traumatic events can disrupt the natural healing process. By analyzing trends in emotional processing—such as difficulties in acknowledgment, understanding, acceptance, or transformation—the system identifies areas where an officer may be struggling to cope effectively.

In addition, the platform assesses emotional intelligence components like self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management. These measurements are essential for understanding how officers manage their emotions in high-stress environments. Deficiencies in these areas can lead to impulsive reactions or difficulties in social interactions, which are common in a profession where abnormal situations are the norm.

Moreover, SECURE Analytics provides insights into communication patterns, particularly in high-stakes situations. Officers who habitually avoid crucial conversations or exhibit defensive or passive-aggressive behaviors may be exhibiting signs of stress or trauma. Identifying these patterns helps highlight communication breakdowns that can lead to further dysfunction.

The system also tracks somatic symptoms, which often manifest as a result of unresolved trauma. Chronic tension, hypervigilance, and other physical symptoms are common in police officers who have been repeatedly exposed to traumatic events. Recognizing the microexpression of these symptoms is crucial for understanding the full impact of their work environment on their physical and psychological health.

Lastly, SECURE Analytics evaluates the psychological safety of the officer’s environment. In an environment where psychological safety is compromised, officers may develop dysfunctional coping strategies as a means of self-protection. For instance, if officers do not feel safe to voice concerns or challenge the status quo, they may resort to behaviors that are detrimental to their mental health and professional effectiveness.

2

Placing Officers on the Life Cycle

Given the data-driven foundation of SECURE Analytics, the tool categorizes officers on the Police Life Cycle based on their current psychological, emotional, and somatic state, as well as their experience of psychological safety.

This categorization is primarily descriptive, capturing what is already known within the profession. However, it also lays the foundation for predictive analytics by identifying patterns that can signal potential future challenges. For example, an officer who frequently displays signs of fear, struggles with emotional integration, avoids crucial conversations, and exhibits somatic symptoms of trauma may be placed in the "Settling In" or "Frustration" stages of the life cycle. These stages not only reflect the current state but also indicate a heightened risk for future issues, signaling a need for immediate and targeted intervention.

The placement on the life cycle is dynamic, with SECURE Analytics continuously summarizing and updating the officer’s data. This ensures that the life cycle placement accurately reflects the officer's evolving state, helping to identify when they may be at risk of further dysfunction and when they are ready to move towards recovery.

3

Developing a Prescriptive Training Program

Once an officer's stage on the life cycle has been determined, SECURE Analytics generates a prescriptive training program tailored to the officer's specific needs. This program is grounded in the understanding that police officers must dishabituate to their environment to recover from the effects of constant exposure to abnormal circumstances. The concept of neuroplasticity is central to this approach, as it allows officers to rewire their brains to respond more adaptively to their environment.

For officers in the early stages of "settling in," which is a subtle form of resistance to anger, the program might focus on improving self-awareness, self-management, and communication skills. These interventions aim to help officers recognize and address the early signs of dysfunction before they become more deeply entrenched. The training also incorporates techniques that help officers see their environment with fresh eyes, promoting dishabituation and encouraging healthier coping strategies.

For officers in more advanced stages of frustration, such as "rejection," which is a more pronounced state of anger, the training program would include trauma-informed care that addresses both psychological and somatic symptoms of trauma. This might involve somatic experiencing, a therapeutic approach that focuses on the body’s role in processing trauma, alongside intensive communication training. The goal is to help officers re-engage with their environment in a way that promotes healing and resilience.

The prescriptive training program is adaptive and evolves as the officer progresses through the life cycle stages. SECURE Analytics ensures that the program remains relevant by continuously updating the officer’s profile with new data, allowing for timely adjustments to the training plan.

Through descriptive analytics, SECURE Analytics provides a clear and detailed understanding of dysfunctional coping strategies in police officers. By leveraging existing knowledge within the profession and focusing on neuroplasticity to promote dishabituation, the system helps officers recover from the impact of their work environment. This approach ensures the overall well-being of officers and enhances the effectiveness and health of the policing community.
